We are constantly being told to save energy and to think more about the environment. And most of us appreciate the importance of reducing greenhouse emissions in a bid to control climate change.
But, saving energy can be difficult and many people are put off thinking it means feeling colder in the winter, using the car less and sitting in the gloom of an evening.
Energy saving doesn’t have to be so troublesome. In fact, there are many energy-saving products that can help us reduce our energy consumption but also help us to save money too.
Energy saving gadgets work under one of three key principles: Efficiency, eliminating waste or monitoring our use.
Efficiency
Perhaps the most practical energy saving device is the energy saving light-bulb. Because of the amount of lights in our homes, and the need for electric lighting at night, the cumulative savings of switching incandescent bulbs for energy saving ones can be quite dramatic.
While more expensive to buy initially, energy saving lightbulbs pay for themselves many times over throughout the life of the bulbs.
Eliminating Waste
Many of the modern appliances we use at home, such as the TV, DVD player, computer, Hi-Fi and a myriad of other gadgets, often have stand-by modes. Stand-by, actually still consumes power, sometimes as much as a quarter than it does while switched on. This is a terrible waste of energy and while the ability of having these devices spring into life at the touch of a remote button is convenient, it is still wasteful.
Stand-by savers can shut down these devices without the need for you to rummage around with in the plug sockets. Nearly all modern appliances with a stand-by function can be hooked up to a stand-by saver which will save both energy and money without you even noticing.
Monitoring Energy
Another way of identifying waste and inefficient appliances is to monitor energy. Energy and electricity monitors can help you keep an eye on a household, or business energy consumption enabling you to identify high usage devices and wasted power.
